Formula Student - Competition

To find out how good our vehicle is, in comparison to the other Formula Student Teams from all over the world we take part in the yearly held competitions. Those competitions are the reward for our month-long hard work. At the end of each competition the tram with the best overall concept of construction, race performance, finance planning and marketing strategy is the one standing on the podium.

To guarantee that the vehicle is safe the technical inspection, also called scrutineering takes place at the beginning of each event. During the inspection all parts and components are tested and checked if they match the rules and regulations. When the inspection is passed more test have to be successful completed. During the tilt-table test the car is lifted into a 45° and 60° position where no fluids are allowed to leak and the wheels must not lift. All vehicles also have to pass a brake test. Electric vehicles also have to complete a rain test that shows the parts are resistant to rain and splash water. Furthermore a test of the main switch takes place. When all tests are successfully passed the vehicle is allowed on the test area.

The competition itself is divided into static and dynamic events which are broken into different disciplines. Those disciplines are essential in determining the overall winner of the competition because every single points counts at the end. The static event consists of 3 disciplines. During the Design Report the team has to present their constructive solutions to a jury of experts from the automotive and first tier supplier branch. The marketing strategy is tested in the Business Plan, where topics such as production, marketing and service are presented to a jury. The third discipline is the Cost Report, where all calculated productions costs for the prototype and a Real Case Scenario are analyzed.

Within the dynamic events the self-developed vehicle has to prove its talent on the race track. In the disciplines Acceleration, on a 75m long track, Skid Pad, a double circle track, and the Autocross, where a unknown track has be driving as fast as possible, the first points can be made. The highlight of each competition is the Endurance. The 22 kilometer long track asks a lot from the car and driver. But it is also nerve racking for the team members watching. But at the end not only the fastest time, but also the energy consumption is important.
