Formula Student
The Formula Student is a special international design competition.
Teams of students are assigned to design and produce a prototype vehicle of a single-seated racecar, which then will compete in events with other teams from all over the world.
Let’s have a short look into the history….
1981 the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) founded the Formula SAE in the USA. In 1998 the Formula Student crossed the atlantic and reached Europe. The first European “Formula Student” event took place in Great Britain. Attracted by the unique atmosphere and the possibility of gaining practical experiences during the studies, more and more teams were founded. Thus the Formula Student gained a foothold.
In the year 2000 the first German team was founded. The first German competition, sponsored and organized by VDI, took place in 2006.
In the meantime, the Formula Student fever has “infected” approximately 80 German teams and over 470 teams around the world. Especially in Australia, Japan, Great Britain, Canada, Germany and the USA the competition is very popular.

All these events are following similar rules, so that each team can take part in different events with their racecar. The base for the design and assembly is a given contract document including requirements concerning technical specifications, emissions and active/passive safety. The patronage for the prototype is assumed to be a hobby race car driver, who demands the car to be reliable, easy to handle as well as to have good driving characteristics in regard to acceleration and brake effort.
The racecar is presented in the different dynamic and static events. The winner of the competition will be the team with the best total package of design, performance, financial planning and sales arguments.
In a time of increasing environmental pollution and scarce resources hybrid- and electric motors are becoming more and more important. The Formula Student, as well, is adapting itself to and growing with these new challenges. The rules of both categories differ in some points because of the different drive concepts. The evaluation is carried out separately.
